The 10-Year Rule: For every inch of average monthly rainfall you expect during your wettest season, your raised beds need to be at least that many inches above the walking paths.

- The Canopy Buffer: By planting dense cover crops (like cowpeas or buckwheat) alongside your cash crops, or leaving heavy crop residue on the surface, you create a biological shock absorber. The rain hits the leaves first, shatters into a fine mist, and gently drips down to the soil.
- The Sponge Effect: The roots of these cover crops physically hold the earth together, preventing mudslides. Furthermore, the decaying organic matter acts like a massive sponge, drastically increasing the amount of water the soil can absorb before it floods.
3. Nutrient Washout: Feeding Plants in a Flood
One of the most frustrating things during the rainy season is watching your plants turn yellow, even though they have plenty of water.
When massive volumes of water flush through the soil profile, it causes leaching. The water literally washes the water-soluble nutrients—specifically Nitrogen and Potassium—deep into the subsoil, pushing them completely out of reach of your plant’s roots. Your crop is drowning and starving at the same time.
The Nutritional Fix: Foliar Feeding
If the soil is a swamp, you cannot add more granular fertilizer to the ground. It will just wash away or fail to be absorbed by the suffocating roots.
Instead, you bypass the soil entirely. We mix organic liquid fertilizers (like fish emulsion or liquid kelp) and spray them directly onto the leaves of the crops during brief dry windows. The stomata (tiny pores on the leaves) absorb the nutrients instantly, giving the plant a critical lifeline of Nitrogen to keep it green and growing until the soil dries out enough to resume normal root feeding.
4. The Fungal Invasion: Why Airflow is King
In agriculture, heat plus heavy moisture equals fungus.
When the rain finally stops, the humidity skyrockets. If your plants are densely packed together, the air gets trapped under the wet leaves. This creates the absolute perfect breeding ground for Powdery Mildew, Early Blight, and Downy Mildew. The Preventative Fix: Aggressive Pruning
